Against all odds, Red Hook Studios, the developer of Darkest Dungeon 2 has shaken almost everything from its original for some reason, and undeniably it’s for the better. As they say “The biggest risk is not taking any risks” and seems like this indie game developer went all in for this quote. The game has just been released on the 8th of May 2023 and has received mostly positive reviews on Steam.
However, let’s find out what is it that makes this sequel like no other. How is the experience with this sequel any different from the original? and How Darkest Dungeon 2 evolved to be darker than its original? Read along as we dive deeper into this gothic road trip game.
Darkest Dungeon 2 in a Nutshell

The game itself is inspired by the world of Lovecraft and the concept is quite simple. There is a group of heroes that you control while they go on a “road trip”. The ultimate goal here is to avert an apocalypse. On the way, players will come across numerous enemies. These enemies can be defeated using heroes all having unique abilities of their own.

The players can in fact take a break during the run in order to heal their heroes for the combat. The run itself is quite unique which adds to the depth of the game. During the run players can consider choosing different paths, all of them resulting in different outcomes.
The Lovecraft horror along with the grim and brutal aesthetic of the game is also something that adds to the impressiveness of this roguelike road trip game.
How Darkest Dungeon 2 evolved to be darker

Coming to the real juice, the real hype is all about how the Darkest Dungeon 2 can nowhere be compared with its original. As mentioned earlier the developers have totally shaken almost everything from the original. However, the aesthetic of Darkest Dungeon 2 somehow has been managed to be kept intact and it sits right with its original.
For example, when it comes to the art style of the game, Darkest Dungeon 2 has the same gothic theme that we Lovecraftian lovers enjoyed from the first game. However, what’s different is that it has become 3D, unlike the 2D one that we saw in its original. This new art style has completely changed the environmental effects and the camera angles for the better, totally adding value to the whole experience.
The Story
For the story, The original Darkest Dungeon was equipped with more of a linear storyline. But this sequel offers more of an open-ended one. During the run, players can consider choosing different paths, all of them resulting in different outcomes, thus a different story.

Last but not least, Darkest Dungeon 2 has also made some changes to the gameplay mechanics of the game. A new party wagon has been introduced, this allows players to upgrade the heroes or in fact recruit new ones. The players can also take a break during the run in order to heal their heroes for combat using the new camping system that has been introduced.
The new location, cast, character, and enemies are also something that adds to the fact that Darkest Dungeon 2 has evolved to become even darker.
That is all that we could find when it comes to how much Darkest Dungeon 2 has evolved from the original. Do let us know in the comment section below if there is something that we might have missed. The storyline seems to be quite lengthy so let’s conclude this here and start pumping hours into the Darkest Dungeons 2. Which we all are excited about.
