The problem of watching Star Wars in timeline order

I have always been interested in Star Wars. It’s just that I was never motivated enough to get into such a big franchise as Star Wars. The Mandalorian’s first two seasons made me a fan of Star Wars but it was Andor that got me hooked. Right after Andor, I decided to not cancel my Disney+ subscription (which I had previously planned) but to keep it and start watching all of Star Wars in the timeline order that Disney+ has suggested. But there was a problem with watching Star Wars in timeline order.

The thing is that not all Star Wars films are equal. Some are better than others and some are not good as per some fans (I, though, liked them all). If we check the ratings of Star Wars films, there will be one film that will keep coming at the top. I am talking about Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Both fans and critics alike hail that movie as the best Star Wars movie and some even consider it to be the best motion picture ever made. So, is it that good? That is something totally subjective. But if you watch Star Wars in timeline order, I can simply say, you won’t find it as good as people say.

Let me explain the problem. The Empire Strikes Back is considered one of the best films for plenty of reasons. One of the reasons is the unexpected cliffhanger plot twist of the film. Spoiler: That is Darth Vader being the father of Luke Skywalker.

It was that plot twist and reveal that made and still makes fans blow their minds because of the well-written and directed script. However, if you watch Star Wars in timeline order, you already know the plot twist way before and it just takes away the whole charm from the ending sequence of The Empire Strikes Back.

Imagine watching one of the best Star Wars films with all the anticipation and expectations while already being aware of the relationship between Vader and Luke. Would it still be as entertaining as watching it without a hint of this revealing? Based on personal experience, I don’t think so.

But what happens if we watch the prequel trilogy after the original Star Wars? Well in that way, you would enjoy the Episode 5 reveal but then you would already know the fate of Anakin Skywalker. Hence, your decision to watch Star Wars either in Timeline Order or Release Order depends on the following two choices.

    • Spoiling the plot twist of Episode 5 to enjoy the events in the order they happened.
    • Spoiling the events of the prequel trilogy and the fate of Anakin Skywalker to enjoy the original trilogy as people enjoyed.

I suggested my own brother to go with the first choice while I watched all the films and series in the timeline order. What should you decide? I will leave it up to you. You just have to decide what trilogy will be worth more to you.
