Focusing on the Dance of the Dragons, House of the Dragon follows Martin’s novel Fire and Blood. It is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The major conflict of the show is sparked by King Viserys Targaryen when he names her daughter to succeed the Iron Throne, going against tradition. The trailer showed off King’s Landing, political intrigue, and dragons hyping up fans for the 10-episode thriller.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played the iconic character of Ser Jaime Lannister has reacted to the upcoming spinoff. The Danish actor starred for eight seasons in HBO’s adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire. Here’s what he had to say:
“I know it’s probably going to be weird. Well, I’ve seen the trailer. It seems very familiar. Miguel [Sapochnik], who’s the showrunner, directed some of the big episodes in Game of Thrones. So, I have a feeling it’s going to be quite surreal to watch it.”
House of the Dragon’s trailer would seem very familiar to Kingslayer as it takes place primarily in King’s Landing and deals in political turmoil, which is quite similar to the turbulent life of Jaime in Game of Thrones. Jaime’s character is very close to Coster-Waldau’s heart and Kit Harington also said the same thing a month ago. The universally adverse reaction to season 8 soured enthusiasm and it has raised expectations for all the spinoffs that are in development at HBO.
That said, Coster-Waldau’s feelings on the forthcoming House of the Dragon are understandable not only because of his role in the original series but also because of his connection to the franchise and how he wants it to succeed. Only time will tell if the House of the Dragon will be able to fulfill our expectations. The show premieres on HBO Max on August 21st.
