Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 4 Review and Analysis: Tanjiro Vs. Daki

Before starting Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 4 review, I would like to state that this review and analysis article contains spoilers for the recent Demon Slayer episode, “Tonight”. That said, we will discuss some key moments that happened in Episode 4 of the Entertainment District arc. So far, the new season is going well. With the new Hashira, Tengen – whose full potential is yet to be seen, and our powered-up main characters, there is a good chance that the group can finally take down an Upper Rank Demon.

Without further ado, let’s discuss the new episode.

    Demon Slayer Corps Ranking

So, this episode has finally shed a light on the Demon Slayer Corps ranking system. Up till now, we only knew that Tanjiro and his squad were at the bottom ranks and Hashiras were the top ones. However, it has been revealed from the ranking chart that Hashira is not a rank in the Corps but a title given only to a handful of top-ranked Demon Slayers. The main characters were seen to be promoted from Mizunoto to Kanoe. It’s interesting that each Demon Slayer can check their rank anytime by chanting some code words and their designated rank would appear on their hands. This display of the ranks is through a process called Wisteria Carving.

Following is the complete ranking from Demon Slayer Wiki:
    Mizunoto → Mizunoe → Kanoto → Kanoe → Tsuchinoto → Tsuchinoe → Hinoto → Hinoe → Kinoto → Kinoe

    Inosuke’s Character Development

Before jumping on to the other points, it is worth discussing that Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 4 has shown quite the character development of the Inosuke. The pig-head-wearing slayer of the Demons has been seen as very responsible so far in the Entertainment District arc. The rooftop conversation signified that Inosuke is all on the mission and is willing to cooperate with his teammates to the fullest. We can say that after Rengoku’s death, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke all have become stronger and wiser. But again, Inosuke’s getting responsible and cooperative is interesting.

    Koinatsu’s Importance

Oiran Koinatsu seems to be important for this arc. She is present in the opening theme as well and now that we have seen that Daki – the UpperRank Six wants to devour her before she leaves the town, it further highlights that she might have an important role to play in the story. It is unknown that why Daki wants to eat Koinatsu. Perhaps she gains beauty by consuming the people she deems pretty or perhaps that she had a personal feud with the innocent Oiran.

Speaking of Koinatsu, it was funny and obvious to see that she already knew that Tanjoro was a male disguised as a woman. However, this would surprise me if anyone from the brothels still believe that Tanjiro and the rest are actually female. But as weird it is, it is also likely the case because if everyone knew about their disguise, the trio would have been in trouble by now.

    Tanjiro Vs. Daki

So, the main highlight of Episode 4 of the Entertainment District arc is the clash between the Tanjiro and Daki. Needless to say, being Upper Rank Six, Daki is meant to be pretty strong. All of the Upper Rank Demons are said to have lived for centuries and have gotten stronger throughout the years by consuming civilians and Demon Slayers including Hashiras. From what we have seen so far, even Hashiras struggle against Upper Rank Demon. We all know how Rengoku vs. Akaza turned out.

That brings us to the point that what can a lower-ranked Demon Slayer can do against the Upper Rank Six. We don’t think that Tanjiro can actually defeat Daki (or at least he shouldn’t give their current power levels) but we do acknowledge that he can put up a decent battle. Even in this episode, we have seen Tanjiro showing great skills as he parried Daki’s attacks and cut the part where Koinatsu was captured. This attempt of his even made Daki praise him.

Daki seems to have supernatural powers as she can consume people with her tentacles like cloths that she barely wears herself. As powerful as she seems, it is noteworthy that she is a Upper Rank Demon. Given that Tanjiro has powered up and Inosuke and a Hashira are on their way, we can assume that Daki doesn’t seem to have a good fate ahead. But who knows…

    Buff Mice

Last but not least, we want to discuss Buff Mice or officially known as “Shadow Demon Slayer Corps“. These are the servants of Tengen Uzui and provide services like helping Demon Slayers, hiding in enemy territories, and more. It was just hilarious to see them getting swords for Inosuke. I wish we all had Buff Mice as servants.
