To recruit characters, you need to have enough “strategy” points. In each chapter of the main storyline, you can choose the pre-battle tactics you want to perform. The game plan that you are building should incorporate the recruited characters in such a way that they can fit into your plan of action.

    Recruit using Exchanging Renown

You can also recruit characters by exchanging Renown. Once you’ve completed the game you will unlock characters that were previously unavailable to play with. Rhea, Arval, and Sothis are examples of such characters. Since these are expensive characters it will take you more than one playthrough to unlock them all. You can get renown by working at the camp or by finishing main missions.

    Doing specific missions

Some characters are only recruited after completing specific goals in the combat. One such example is recruiting Byleth for which you have to not fight them during side missions so you can recruit them later for yourself.
