Don’t Look Up: Did the star-studded movie live up to its hype?

Don’t Look Up is an American satirical, sci-fi and comedy film directed by Adam Mckay. The movie stars Oscars award winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in lead roles alongside Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Rob Morgan, Tyler Perry and many others. A huge comet is approaching the earth and it will cause extinction. Everyone should be dead terrified right? Well, that is not the case. The movie portrays that how if we are in the middle of an apocalypse, capitalism will take over us. So the real question here is that did the star-studded movie live up to its hype? I decided to watch the movie a few days back solely based on the outstanding cast.

Adam Mckay wrote the script with the journalist David Sirota. The film conveys an extremely pointed composition on the useless condition of current governmental issues and media, in which everybody is so nearsighted as to not focus on an existential danger. The name mirrors the unavoidable endpoint of that, with an avoid reality way to deal with looming destruction.

The story explores issues we are facing as a society. People believe everything they see or read on social media, capitalism is instilled in our minds and the government will do anything to save themselves. The movie shows three kinds of people: those who want to stop the comet, those who want to make money out of the comet and those who do not believe in the comet at all. The movie shows the social divide that we face this way.

    Climate change as a metaphor

The major takeaway is that the government should do something about climate change. The comet is a metaphor for climate change. Climate change is real and it is eating our planet like a parasite. The most concerning thing is that the people in authority are still not taking climate change seriously.

    Government Action

When the government decides to finally take action, for their own benefit obviously it is too late. The comet hits the planet and everything is destroyed with only a few survivors.

    Rating and Opinion

In my opinion, the movie was a wonderfully done satire and we need to take climate change seriously. The actors delivered amazing performances. Meryl Streep who plays President Orlene also portrayed the self-centred president who does not care very well in my opinion. The movie is a total wake up call for us that if we do not take care of our planet and be serious, disaster will follow. I would urge everyone who loves quality cinema to watch this movie. My rating would be a solid 8/10.
